STATS/SEASON

The Indoor soccer program officially starts on , September 20th and it runs every Sunday (except vacations and holiday weekends) until May 2012 (exact date to be specified in the Spring).

Preseason games are for new/old players to get used to the program’s rules and get used to playing indoors before games actually count.

ATTENDANCE

In order for a game to count there must be at least 7 original players of each team on the court at game time.
In order for a player to be considered an original player on a team he/she must be listed in a roster on the Facebook group. This is so that teams don’t bring in random players every week.

If a team has less than 5 original players, they must forfeit the game
NEW: If a team has exactly seven players (no subs) at the start of the game, they may choose only one freelance player to substitute for as long as needed.
No players may be added or swapped once playoff tournament begins.
Captains must have teammates’ phone numbers in order to ensure attendance.
In order to be placed in a team roster contact Nick or Carlos.

SPORTSMANSHIP AND SAFETY

The atmosphere of the game is competitive; however, unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated. This includes any kind of abusive, violent, sexist, racist, or any other unwelcome comments, actions, or gestures.
Unsportsmanlike behavior will result in a BLUE card.
There is zero tolerance for fighting as well as rough playing. Such behavior will immediately result in a RED card.
We do not have a first aid kit on hand at games but in the event of an injury Public Safety will be called to the gym and they will provide first aid or call for medical transport if needed.

GAME LOCATIONS

All Sunday games will be played in the Tripp Athletic Center, unless otherwise noted.
Pick-up games will be held outdoors pending favorable weather conditions.
These will take place in either the roller hockey rink next to Ivy or on the open field between the track and the baseball field and will be announced via a Facebook event.

GAME REQUIREMENTS

Wear your team's color to every game, it helps identify those in your team during game play.
Bring a change of shoes to play, preferably indoor soccer shoes. This will prevent the court from getting slippery with outside dirt.
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your game starts so you can warm up and so the game can start on time.
In order to ensure the safety of everyone we will periodically check UMass Passes to make sure only UMass students, staff, or faculty are playing, Be sure to bring your card with you just in case.

GAME RULES

TEAM REQUIREMENT & GAME LENGTH
Teams will have to forfeit a game if they have less than four players. (see attendance rule above)
There must be 7 players on the court for each team. 6 field players and 1 goalie.
Games will run for one hour with a two-minute water break at the half point. There is no overtime or penalty shootouts in the event of a tie during the regular season. Penalty kicks will be used to break ties only during playoff tournament.
Crisis Rule (Mercy Rule): In the event of a 10 goal difference the game will be called. This is to prevent another 20-0 slaughter.
REFEREES: Games will be monitored and regulated by Nick and Carlos. We will call time, fouls, and any other doubtful plays. We will use our discretion when awarding cards as a result of game infractions.
Starting a Game
COIN TOSS: Winner of the coin toss will have possession of the ball to start the half. Loser of the coin toss will have possession for the start of the second half.
KICKOFF: (start of halves and after goal scored) will be taken from the center mark, upon sound of the whistle. A kickoff can only occur if all players are on their respective side of the court.
BALL MOVEMENT: Initial kicker may pass the ball in any direction for a kick off but may not score off the first touch.
Defending players must be 6 yards away from the ball upon kick-off.
Initial kicker may not touch ball again until another player has done so.
GOAL CELEBRATION: A team is at liberty to celebrate a goal to the extent they wish but as soon as all players have returned to their corresponding sides the game may be restarted by the team who was just scored on.
Goalkeeper
BALL DISTRIBUTION: Goalies may never use their hands to handle a ball that was directly distributed to them by a player in their own team. Goalies may only distribute a ball with their hand if they catch it from an opposing player (shots on goal). Balls kicked out of bounds in the goalie's direction (shots) may only be put in play through a goal kick, not a punt or a throw.
BALL DISTRIBUTION (CONT’D): After obtaining possession of the ball the goalkeeper has 6 seconds to distribute ball from inside goalkeeper's box.
BALL DISTRIBUTION (NEW RULE) - When the goalie throws or kicks the ball, it must touch a player, the court or wall before crossing mid court. Penalty will be an indirect free kick awarded to the opposing team from mid court line. As a result, a goal may not be scored from a goal kick.
INTERFERENCE: Opposing players must be outside the goalie's box in order for a goalkeeper distribution to take place. Penalty will be a blue card.
BOX: The goalkeeper's box consists of the yellow lines that are located in front of the goalkeeper's net. The goalkeeper must remain inside said box when having hand possession of the ball.
SUBSTITUTION: Goalkeeper substitution must be announced to the referee and can only take place during a game stoppage.
PENALTY KICKS: Goalkeeper must keep heels on the goal line until whistle is blown.
Game Regulations:
WALL PLAYING: Players may use the wall to play the ball. Bleachers do not count as walls.
OFFSIDE: Rule does not apply to indoor soccer.
SLIDE TACKLES- Slide tackling is not allowed in any situation, offense or defense if you're a position player. Goal keeper slides will be ruled according to our judgment.
HAND BALL: A hand ball will only be called if a player intentionally uses his hands to block the trajectory of the ball, ball contact with hands above the waist line will be considered a hand ball as well, blatant hand balls will be penalized with a BLUE card.
SUBSTITUTION: A player(s) may be subbed in on the fly at any point during the game as long as it doesn’t interfere with, or interrupt, game play. Substitutions may not occur on a fast break.
DROP BALLS: The referee will call for a drop ball in the event of a player injury, outside interference, or in the event it cannot be determined who kicked a ball out of bounds.
ADVANTAGE RULE: We will allow play to continue, notwithstanding the commission of an offense, when the team against which it has been committed will benefit from an existing offensive advantage.
CORNER KICKS: Occur when the ball is kicked behind own goal line. Corner kick must take place from white "X" marked on the court surface. A corner kick can also occur if the goalkeeper steps behind the goalie line with the ball.
Penalty & Free Kicks (Direct and Indirect)
PENALTY KICK: A penalty kick will take place if a foul is committed inside the smaller box inside the goalkeeper box. Barring injury, the player who was fouled on must take the penalty kick.
PENALTY KICK (CONT'D): a penalty kick will take place 20 feet from the goalie line and will be initiated upon whistle.
PK REBOUNDS: If the ball is deflected by the goalkeeper the player who took the kick is allowed to take a rebound shot. Penalty kicks during tiebreakers (playoffs) do not support this rebound rule.
INDIRECT FREE KICKS: If the ball touches the basketball hoops, the curtains or any other object above the court, a free indirect kick will be awarded to the opposing team at the spot where the ball hit the object. An indirect kick will be awarded for technical offenses. A goal cannot be scored directly.
